Class Details

In this full day class taught by visiting instructor Sian Hamilton you will make a unique Geometric style pendant using scratch foam for the texture.

You will learn how to draw your own geometric pattern texture using scratch foam for a domed silver pendant. Scratch foam is an affordable dense polystyrene sheet that can be drawn on to produce any design or pattern you desire. There are specific tips and tricks to getting the perfect scratch foam texture that Sian will teach you.

The pattern will be your choice and unique to you. The texture is transferred to the silver clay and dried over a dome shape. Demonstrated instructions will be given showing each process in full, this class is hands on. You will create your own texture mat, roll and texture silver clay then dry over a dome and refine before firing.

For the In Person class the class kit will provide enough clay to make a 40mm pendant. You are welcome to make a larger piece, but you will need to provide your own clay or purchase extra clay in class. The size will be up to you! Pendant cutters will be provided in class in varying sizes and shapes. For online students, details of how to purchase pendant cutters will be provided.

You will also learn how to create a hidden arch bail for the back. Hidden bails give a beautiful visual finish to the piece with no jump ring in sight!

After firing, we will add color with acrylic inks and seal them with clear UV resin. This finish gives a beautiful stained glass look.

Full step by step instructions as a digital pdf and access to a video showing the process will be provided.

Skill Level: An understanding of how silver clay works is advantageous but not essential. This class is for all skill levels. You do NOT need any drawing skills!

Sian is a British designer based in Surrey, United Kingdom. She has a BA in 3D Design specialising in metals and ceramics.

When silver clay came to the market in 1996 it was the perfect medium for her. First developed in Japan and distributed in the US in 96, silver clay took a couple more years to reach UK shores. Sian has been involved in the metal clay community since 1998 when she first got her hands on this wonderful material.

She started teaching with silver clay 20+ years ago and loves to help everyone see the possibilities of metal clay develop right in front of their eyes as they create their unique pieces in class. Whether Sian’s teaching beginners or an advanced masterclass, her teaching style is patient and caring, with a focus on a ‘can do’ style and as much guidance as the individual needs.

Sian also runs a web and graphic design business, alongside creating and selling 3D printed cutters for the metal clay community.
